With the NBA lockout now history, Dallas Mavericks fans can finally heave a sigh of relief and get down to the business of watching some great basketball. There’s no denying that the Mavericks are one of the most consistent teams in basketball. They’ve won 50 or more regular-season games in the last decade and beat the Miami Heat four games to two in 2011 to win the NBA finals. But the Mavericks weren’t always on top. Between 1990 and 2000, they had one of the worst track records of any team in NBA history. The 1992-93 season, which ended with arecord of 11 wins and 71 losses, marked the lowest point in Maverick history.
After Internet entrepreneur Mark Cuban bought the team in early 2000, the Mavericks came roaring back a year later. Led by the trio of Dirk Nowitzki, Michael Finley and Steve Nash, they made the playoffs in 2001 and eventually the West Conference Finals in 2003. Michael Finley and Steve Nash eventually left to play for the San Antonio Spurs and Phoenix Suns respectively. But the Mavs signed Jason Kidd, Jason Terry and a host of new talents that helped them maintain their competitive edge, which continues to dazzle to this day.
Though they’ve started slowly, it’s early in the season and with as much talent as they have, they’re likely to compete again by season’s end.
